VINCI Facilities upgrades maternity block at Royal Berkshire Hospital

VINCI Facilities has completed an extensive upgrade to Rushey Ward, within the maternity block at the Royal Berkshire Hospital near Reading.

The ward, located on the top floor of the 1960s hospital, is a labour assessment unit and birth centre run by a team of dedicated midwives and expects to deliver around 6,000 babies each year. VINCI Facilities was brought in to complete a full refurbishment of the unit, while in use, and to create a modern, calming area to reduce the stress of expectant mothers.

The work carried out, while in constant use, included the creation of a new delivery ward, comprising four private en suite birthing rooms, complete with birthing pools, two triage rooms, two patient reception areas, a new nurses station as well as support and office facilities. Each of the birthing rooms now contains bespoke joinery units specially designed to conceal all clinical equipment away from view, while mood lighting and the birthing pools help to create a calming and relaxed atmosphere.

“Upgrading Rushey Unit was a fantastic project to work on and we were delighted to be able to make improvements that make such a difference to the expectant mothers” commented Tony Raikes, Managing Director of VINCI Facilities. “We have extensive expertise in this area, and we worked closely with the onsite team to ensure we delivered the best possible service, avoiding any unnecessary disruption to existing patients.”
